Mazovian orchards – the wealth of the region

For many years, Poland has been famous for its agricultural economy. One of the most rapidly developing regions in this respect is the Mazowieckie Voivodeship located in central Poland. Read more to discover its phenomenon…..

Very fertile soils which are found in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship enable a thriving development of agricultural economy. The total agricultural land occupies 2257.9 thousand hectares (64%) of the voivodeship area, which is as much as 13% of the agricultural area of the whole country. Mazovia’s natural resources include not only the well-known Grójecki apples, but it is also the second largest cereal producer in Poland; interestingly Mazovia is the leader in milk production in the country.

Masovian Orchards

Mazovia has the most orchards in Poland (111,272 ha), of which 75075 ha are planted with apples. The most popular apple varieties are Golden, Champagne Prince and Gala. Apart from apple orchards, there are also pear, plum, peach, cherry and cherry tree orchards.

Organic orchards in Mazovia

Organic orchards have become extremely popular in the Mazovia region. This is a very tempting direction for some farmers because of the large market and at the same time an even greater variety of fruit farming in the region.

Mazovia can also boast the Grójecko-Warki region. The area around Warka is not accidentally called “flowing with beer and standing for apples”. There is a unique Apple Trail there, running through abundant fruit orchards and picturesque areas of the Pilica River Valley. On the trail there are tourist attractions where the main theme is Grójec and Warecki apples. The trail leads through the region of the history of fruit farming in the Warecka Land, from small family farms to modern fruit production and distribution systems.

The apple is not just a fruit

Producing and selling apples is one thing, but in the apple-growing region of Grójec and Warecka district fruit growers and dealers are not limited to this. They process their natural goods in many different ways, from various kinds of compotes to, for example, bread with apples or traditional baked goods such as apple pie or apple tart. This extremely popular fruit is very versatile and can fit into practically any cuisine in the world.

Various events related to apples, fruit growing and agriculture are organised in Mazovia, such as: “weekend on the apple trail” in Warka, “Apple Blossom Day” in Grójec or “Błędów orchards” in Błędów. These events are extremely popular in the Mazovia region, which emphasises the popularity and importance of this fruit.

Soil cultivation in Masovia

Black earth and brown earth are the most common soils in the Masovia region. This favours the production of cereals, of which the Mazowieckie Voivodeship is the second largest producer in Poland and a leading exporter of vegetables. Leguminous plants also play an important role; thanks to them, it is possible to obtain products which play an important role in the region’s economy, in particular food for farm animals, mainly pigs.

Forests

Due to good soil adaptations in Mazovia, forests cover a large percentage of the voivodeship. Mainly pine and larch forests cover about 815 thousand ha, which is less than 23% of the voivodeship area. The largest forest areas are the Biała, Bolimowska, Kampinoska, Kozienicka and Kurpiowska Forests. Legally protected areas cover approximately 30%.
